What it is — and what it isn't
Body contouring, not a weight-loss solution
Liposuction removes localized fat deposits that don't respond to diet or exercise, and reshapes the contour of a specific body area. It's precision surgery on subcutaneous fat, planned individually based on your anatomy.
What it isn't is just as important to say clearly: liposuction is not an obesity treatment, it doesn't replace a change in habits, and it's not a shortcut to losing weight. The best candidates are already close to their stable weight and are looking to refine specific areas — not start their weight-loss journey there. If your main goal is losing weight, the right conversation in your assessment is about other options, not contour surgery.
Many clinics in Tijuana market liposuction as a quick fix for a dress size or a number on the scale. We prefer to be direct: it's contour, not a weight promise. That honesty is also the criterion we use to decide whether the procedure applies to your case.
It's also not the same as abdominoplasty. Liposuction removes localized fat; it doesn't remove excess skin or repair abdominal muscle separated by pregnancy or a major weight change. If your situation includes excess skin or diastasis, that conversation — and the possibility of combining procedures — is part of your assessment, not an assumption made beforehand.
Ideal candidate
When it applies
- Stable weight, close to your personal goal — not as a starting point for weight loss.
- Localized fat areas that don't respond to diet or exercise.
- Realistic expectations about contour, not about body-weight transformation.
- Good general health, without conditions that complicate surgery.
- Skin with enough elasticity to adapt to the new contour (evaluated in consultation).
- Willingness to follow recovery instructions, including the compression garment.
When it's not appropriate
When it doesn't apply
- You're looking for an obesity treatment or an alternative to losing weight.
- You have uncontrolled health conditions (for example, metabolic or cardiovascular).
- You're pregnant or breastfeeding.
- You expect a specific number of sizes or pounds as a promised result.
- You smoke actively and can't pause before and after surgery (it affects recovery).
- You're looking to address excess skin or separated muscle without first assessing other surgical options.
Treatable areas
It's decided with you, in your assessment
We don't set in advance how many areas will be treated or to what extent: Dr. Chama determines that in your assessment, based on your anatomy, your skin quality, and your general health. Below are the areas most frequently consulted.
In some plans, more than one area is worked on in the same surgery when medical judgment supports it — for example, abdomen and flanks together, so the contour looks proportional from different angles, not like an isolated area. That decision depends on your health and surgical safety limits, not a menu of options to pick freely.
Abdomen and waist
The most consulted area; evaluated alongside skin quality.
Back and flanks
Worked together with the abdomen when the plan calls for it.
Arms and legs
Additional areas assessed based on your anatomy and goal.
How it's performed
Assessment first, then surgery
It all starts with an in-person medical assessment at Hospital MAC, where the surgical plan is defined: areas, scope, and type of anesthesia based on your case. Before surgery, your health history is reviewed and, if your case requires it, prior studies confirming you're fit for surgery. We don't show images of the procedure itself — the information here is educational, not graphic.
Recovery
In stages, with support
After surgery, a compression garment is indicated along with follow-up visits to monitor your progress. Some swelling, sensitivity, and bruising in the first days is normal, and it subsides progressively as the inflammation goes down. Activity resumes gradually, starting with walking, and higher-effort exercise is reintroduced once Dr. Chama authorizes it at a follow-up visit — not on a fixed date for every patient. Exact timing varies by patient; in your assessment you receive concrete instructions for your case, with follow-up in person or remote if you're coming from California.
Risks and considerations
Honesty first
The risk least anticipated with liposuction isn't bleeding or infection — it's that skin doesn't always adapt evenly to the new contour, which can leave surface irregularities. Among the other considerations reviewed in your assessment: bleeding, infection, asymmetry, fluid buildup under the skin, temporary sensation changes in the treated area, anesthesia reaction, and the possibility of needing a later adjustment. Smoking, not following compression-garment instructions, or resuming intense physical activity too soon can affect your recovery. We don't promise an exact result: every body responds differently, and that variation is explained frankly before any decision — not after.
If in your assessment Dr. Chama determines the procedure isn't right for your case, that's valuable information too: we prefer to say so in time rather than operate without the correct medical judgment.
Results
Gallery under review
We don't publish photographs of results from this procedure yet. The ones we had didn't pass our own review: they showed pre-surgical markings or moments from the operating room, and that's not the material we want you to make a medical decision with. We'll publish only results shown well after the surgical event, with patient consent and intimate-area censoring. In the meantime, in your assessment you can review cases directly with Dr. Chama.
Frequently asked questions
What patients ask us most
How much does liposuction cost?
The price is defined in your assessment, based on the areas to be treated and your specific surgical plan. We prefer to give you a personalized quote rather than a generic price. Message us on WhatsApp and we'll guide you.
Does liposuction help with weight loss?
No. Liposuction is body contouring surgery: it reshapes areas with localized fat that don't respond to diet or exercise. It's not designed to treat obesity or as a substitute for weight loss, and it's never approached with that expectation.
How do I know if I'm a candidate?
That's determined in an in-person medical assessment. Dr. Chama reviews your weight, your skin, your general health, and your expectations before saying whether the procedure applies to your case.
How many areas can be treated in a single surgery?
It depends on your anatomy, your health, and medical judgment in your assessment. There's no fixed number that applies to every patient: it's an individual decision, not a package deal.
Is it the same as gastric sleeve surgery or a diet plan?
No. They're different interventions with different goals. Liposuction doesn't treat obesity or replace a change in habits; it's body contouring for localized fat in patients with stable weight.
How is it performed?
It's a body-contouring surgery in a hospital setting (Hospital MAC). Anesthesia type and approach are defined based on your specific surgical plan, and explained in detail in your consultation.
What is recovery like?
Recovery is progressive and supported with a compression garment and medical follow-up. Some swelling and sensitivity in the first few days is normal. Timing varies by patient; in your assessment you receive concrete instructions.
What are the risks?
As with any surgery, it carries risks: bleeding, infection, asymmetry, fluid buildup, anesthesia reaction, or the possibility of needing a later adjustment. They're reviewed one by one in your assessment, before any decision.
I'm coming from San Diego / California — how does it work?
We can answer your initial questions through a bilingual virtual consultation. The assessment that confirms which areas will be treated is in person in Tijuana, and from there we coordinate your trip for surgery; follow-up with the compression garment can be monitored remotely once you're back home.
Can liposuction be combined with another procedure?
In some cases yes, when medical judgment and your health allow it — for example, together with an abdominoplasty if there's also excess skin. See abdominoplasty for more detail. That decision is made in your assessment, never before.
